Former HasNa Graduate Participates in National Academy of Sciences Symposium in Tunisia

Fatih Yildiz, who participated in HasNa’s Southeast Anatolia Water Resource Management Project in 2000, was invited by the National Academy of Sciences to participate in a symposium entitled “Strengthening Science-Based Decision-Making for Agricultural Water Management” in Tunis, Tunisia from June 4-9, 2005. It included approximately 30 attendees from Tunisia, other Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) countries, and the United States.

The goal of this workshop was to explore how Tunisia and other countries of the region can marshal their scientific experts to address the problem of insufficient agricultural production caused by water scarcity and to gain a better understanding of how science can inform decision-making through the example of water management and agriculture. The attendees first visited Tozeur and Kairouan to observe agricultural water management practices. They focused on aspects of desert agriculture, including oasis agriculture, hothouses, and recycled wastewater use.
