Iran, Turkey, and the US: Power Triangle for the 21st Century
HasNa hosted the event which featured best-selling author Stephen Kinzer on June 15, 2010. Kinzer argued that the end of the Cold War required a new approach to the Middle East. In its search for partners there the US should be looking for countries that share its long-term strategic goals and that have societies based on democratic values and traditions. The two that best fit this description, he argued, are Iran and Turkey. Kinzer's provoctive arguments sparked a lively Q & A after the presentation.

Panel on the Property Issue in Cyprus
HasNa hosted a panel named “Pieces of Peace: Property in the Cyprus Conflict” on April 17, 2009 to discuss one of the most crucial issues affecting peace on the island. The panel included Rebecca Bryant, Associate Professor of Anthropology at George Mason University and Mete Hatay, Project Leader at the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) Cyprus Centre. Dr. Ronald Fisher, Professor of International Relations at American University and Director of the Division of International Peace and Conflict Resolution in the School of International Service at American University, moderated the panel. The discussion was preceded by a cocktail reception at which attendees had the opportunity to speak with the panelists.
Movie Screening
On March 2, HasNa, in collaboration with the
American Turkish Association of Washington, DC (ATA-DC) screened
a film entitled "Stolen Eyes" at the Avalon Theatre. "Stolen Eyes"
deals with a dark chapter in Bulgarian history, when, in 1985,
the government of Todor Zhivkov decided to "Bulgarianize" its
Turkish minority by outlawing Turkish names, customs, language
and dress, and follows an unlikely love story that develops against
this traumatic backdrop. Ticket proceeds will go to support HasNa
and ATA-DC programs.
Discussion:Turkey’s
Role in the World and How its Internal Politics Affect that Role
HasNa hosted a panel discussion on January 14,
2008 featuring three distinguished experts with three very distinct
views of Turkey: Stephen Kinzer, author of Crescent and Star:
Turkey Between Two Worlds, Omer Taspinar, director of the Turkey
Program at the Brookings Institution, and Yektan Turkyilmaz, a
Ph.D candidate in cultural anthropology at Duke University. The
panelists spoke about recent changes in Turkey's political order
and its commitment to democracy; Turkey's expanding global role
and relations with the U.S.; and the changing popular and political
perceptions of ethnic differences in Turkey. The event commanded
a diverse audience of over 150 people and provided useful and
interesting information for those present.
Discussion on Women in Migration
from Rural Turkey

Bulent Gulcubuk. This event explored the issue of integration
and focused on women from rural Turkey. Click here to see event flier.
Turkish Movie Event: "Hejar"
The movie "Hejar", which was screened
on February 18, 2007, is a compelling tale of a retired Turkish
judge and Hejar, a small, lost Kurdish girl, gently illustrates
the difference between these characters’ two worlds. Despite
the cultural and language barriers this unlikely pair finds comfort
and understanding in each other. All proceeds
from this event will be used to develop HasNa's programs in Turkey
and Cyprus.
Turkish Movie Event: "Boats
Out of Watermelon Rinds"
On October 18, 2005 HasNa screened a Turkish
movie called "Boats Out of Watermelon Rinds." This was an award-winning
movie about the story of two boys who share a great love for the
cinema. The movie event was a great success, with over 300 people
attending. All proceeds from this event will be used to develop
HasNa's programs in Turkey and Cyprus.
